Police are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a police officer at a checkpoint on Sunday night.
According to Haji Ibrahim Saiga, the Assistant Commissioner of Police and Regional Police Commander for East Kyoga, the accident occurred on February 15, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m. at Getom checkpoint.
Saiga said that a Toyota Mark X, registration number UBR 151S, was traveling from Soroti towards Moroto when the driver reportedly knocked a signpost upon reaching the checkpoint. The driver is said to have lost control of the vehicle, which then rammed into a parked motorcycle, registration number UEM 232F, a Bajaj Boxer.
The vehicle subsequently knocked down Police Constable No. 78336 Kirovi Enok, who was attached to the Teso Anti-Stock Theft Unit Sector. He died instantly at the scene.
Another officer sustained injuries in the incident and was rushed to Katakwi General Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Police officers visited and documented the scene as part of ongoing investigations. The suspect driver is being held at Katakwi Central Police Station pending further inquiries.
In a statement, the Uganda Police Force conveyed condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased officer. Authorities also urged motorists to observe traffic regulations and exercise heightened caution, particularly when approaching police checkpoints.
Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing.
