A heavy cloud of grief hangs over Teso Province following the heartbreaking death of Elotu John Raymon, a devoted football fan who succumbed to injuries days after a tragic accident during a FUFA Drum match viewing in Lira city as Teso played against Lango.
What began as a moment of excitement and unity for football lovers quickly turned into a painful tragedy. On Sunday, Raymon reportedly climbed onto the rooftop of a building at UTC Lira, joining other enthusiastic supporters eager to catch a glimpse of the highly anticipated match. In the process, he lost his footing and fell, sustaining severe head injuries that would ultimately claim his life.
He was rushed to Lacor Hospital, where he fought for his life for several days under intensive medical care. Despite the tireless efforts of doctors and medical staff, Raymon passed away on Saturday 04,April, 2025 evening at exactly 9:15 pm.
The devastating news was confirmed by Attan Moses Okia, the Member of Parliament-elect for Soroti City East Division, in an emotional social media post that has since resonated across the region. “Sad news from Lacor hospital. We have lost the battle. Elotu John Raymon passed on at 9:15 pm this evening (Saturday). The medical team did all they could, but our brother has departed due to the serious brain injuries from the calamity in UTC Lira on Sunday,” Okia wrote.
His words captured the collective pain of a community struggling to come to terms with the loss of one of their own a young man whose only intention was to be part of the joy and pride that football brings. “As Teso Province, we have lost one of us. We are all called upon to stand with the family,” he added, calling for unity and compassion in this moment of sorrow.
In the wake of the tragedy, authorities have spoken out, urging the public to prioritize safety during crowded events. According to regional police in Lira, preliminary findings indicate that the structure Raymon climbed was not designated for spectators, making it extremely dangerous. Security officials warned that incidents like these are becoming increasingly common during popular tournaments, where large crowds often resort to unsafe vantage points.
They further called on local leaders, event organizers, and communities to ensure safer viewing arrangements to prevent similar incidents in the future. Across Teso, messages of condolence continue to pour in as friends, leaders, and football fans reflect on the painful loss. What was meant to be a celebration of sport has instead left behind a trail of tears.
Raymon’s death is not just a personal loss to his family—it is a wound felt by an entire region. His story has become a sobering reminder of how quickly joy can turn into tragedy.
