Lawyer and political observer Joshua Okello has officially addressed the nation following the abrupt decision by Hon. Anita Annet Among to withdraw her candidature for the position of Speaker of Parliament.
In a formal statement released today, Okello reflected on the political implications of the withdrawal, noting that the development has necessitated a major change in his team’s political and advocacy agenda.
“It’s with a heavy heart, profound humility, and deep reflection that I address the nation, our media partners, and the gallant citizens of Northern Uganda and the West Nile sub-regions,” Okello stated.
Following the announcement of Hon. Among’s withdrawal, Okello confirmed that his highly anticipated nationwide media tour, which was slated to hit Gulu City on May 22nd and Arua City on May 28th, has been officially canceled.
The lawyer expressed regret over the cancellation, acknowledging the logistical efforts and mounting excitement surrounding the tour. “This decision has not been taken lightly. We understand the immense preparation, expectation, and excitement that our teams and hosts in Gulu and Arua had invested in this journey. We share in your disappointment, but we must stand in solidarity with the shifting tides of our leadership landscape,” he added.
The media tour was viewed by many as a platform for Okello to engage with grassroots leaders and constituents in the Northern and West Nile regions regarding the future of the legislative house. However, with the primary subject of his advocacy—Hon. Among’s Speakership bid—now off the table, Okello appears to be recalibrating his strategy.
In his closing remarks, the lawyer extended his appreciation to the media and the public for their sustained interest in his work.
“We extend our legal, moral, and fraternal gratitude to the media fraternity and the public for your unwavering support. Your dedication and understanding during this final chapter mean everything to us, and we wish you all the very best in your future endeavors,” he concluded.
