Soroti City - Authorities in Soroti City have indefinitely shut down Jozan Nursery and Primary School following the brutal murder of Apio Joan Faith, a pupil at the institution.

The incident, which occurred on February 5, 2025, has sparked widespread outrage, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and local leaders.

During a requiem mass held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Soroti Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Peter Pex Paak condemned the murder, describing it as a "barbaric act" that unfolded in a manner akin to a film.

"This horrific crime happened inside a staff toilet, where the assailant had been waiting before luring the victim. We received the report at 6 p.m. and have since taken action to ensure justice is served," Paak stated.

Authorities have made multiple arrests related to the murder. According to preliminary findings, the perpetrators reportedly used a yellow jerrycan to fetch water, secured the scene with a padlock, and disposed of the keys after committing the crime.

While most suspects are in custody, police are still searching for one individual who was allegedly seen outside the school fence carrying a kaveera (plastic bag), believed to have been used to transport collected blood.

Additionally, a school proprietor from Soroti City, who is suspected of influencing Apio’s parents to enroll their children - Apio and her twin sister, Acen - at Jozan Primary School, has also been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.

He also outlined three potential motives behind the killing that include;

1.Ritual sacrifice – Suspicions of a money-driven sacrifice.

2. Family disputes – Possibility of conflicts within the child’s family.

3. Business rivalry – Competition between schools in Soroti City.

Paak urged the public to reject unlawful means of seeking wealth, stating, "Work hard and trust that God will provide. Do not sacrifice innocent lives for financial gain."

In response to the tragedy, officials have ordered the indefinite closure of Jozan Nursery and Primary School. Parents of pupils who recently completed Primary Seven (P7) and those in the boarding section will be notified of a designated date to collect their children’s results and belongings after the burial.

Apio Joan Faith will laid to rest on February 17, 2025, in their home village of Ateuso, Aminito Parish, Akoromit Subcounty, Kapelebyong District.

In light of the incident, authorities are urging all schools to install surveillance cameras to enhance security. Paak also encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.

"As a community, we must work together to prevent such heinous crimes from happening again," he emphasized.

Law enforcement agencies have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and all individuals involved will be held accountable. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to delivering justice for Apio Joan Faith and ensuring that such an incident does not recur in Soroti City.
