Amuria District – As the country steadily approaches the 2026 general elections, leaders in the Teso sub-region have urged residents to prioritize peace and unity over political wrangles that threaten to derail progress and development.

Teddy Anyuk Osire, an aspiring Member of Parliament for Orungo County, made the call while addressing Christians during the Good Friday commemoration in Amuria District. She used the occasion to urge the public to draw inspiration from the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and work toward healing divisions within communities.

“Politics should not divide us. We need to reflect on what matters most—unity, peace, and development. When we focus too much on political fights, we forget the bigger picture of transforming our region,” Anyuk said.

She emphasized that Teso continues to lag behind in critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare due to prolonged disunity among leaders. “We can’t build better roads or improve our health centers if we keep fighting each other. We must put our people first,” she noted.

Anyuk also cautioned fellow politicians against engaging in character attacks and rivalries that fuel bitterness, especially as political temperatures begin to rise ahead of the 2026 polls.

Echoing her sentiments, Rt. Rev. Dr. Kosea Odongo, the Bishop of the Church of Uganda Diocese of Soroti, appealed to Christians to use the Easter period as a moment of spiritual reflection and peacebuilding. He encouraged the faithful to turn away from division, evil practices, and selfish ambitions.

“Easter reminds us of the value of sacrifice, love, and forgiveness. Let us stop the hatred and rivalry that have set us back as a region. Let Teso stand united,” Bishop Odongo stated.

He further condemned practices such as witchcraft among some leaders and called for renewed faith in God and commitment to the values of truth and justice.

As political campaigns begin to gather pace across the country, the messages from both spiritual and political leaders in Teso serve as a timely reminder for communities to reject toxic politics and embrace inclusive dialogue and collaboration.

With development efforts hanging in the balance, residents are being encouraged to rise above petty differences and contribute to a peaceful electoral process that will benefit future generations.
