Soroti City - In a bid to curb the rampant illegal disposal of waste, Soroti City Council has announced a fine of Sh500,000 for anyone found decomposing garbage in unauthorized areas around the city.
Authorities have already begun placing warning signposts at over 20 strategic locations across Soroti City, cautioning residents against illegal waste dumping. According to James Amolo, the Health Inspector of Soroti City, the fine aims to discourage the habit that has plagued the city for years.
“For a long time, we have struggled with waste management. Now, with this measure in place, we believe we can greatly reduce the amount of garbage scattered in our city,” Amolo said.
The city has contracted two private waste management companies to handle garbage collection: Agasia for Soroti City West and Asante Waste Management for Soroti City East. Any individual found disposing of garbage outside designated areas or bypassing these companies will be fined and possibly face arrest.
Amolo also revealed that the city has deployed teams to monitor and report violators to the authorities. “We’ve hired people specifically to identify and report culprits, who will then be penalized accordingly,” he added.
Beatrice Arigo, the supervisor of cleaners in Soroti City, expressed concern over the growing trend of businesses and some residents allegedly using street children to dump garbage at night.
“We urge the community, especially shop owners, to manage their waste responsibly. Use the licensed collectors like Asante Waste Management and Agasia or take the garbage to Soroti Main Market’s designated dumping points,” she appealed.
City officials hope the new measures will foster a cleaner and healthier urban environment, while also promoting responsible waste management practices among residents.
