SOROTI – A search triggered by reports of a baby allegedly dumped in a dustbin near Soroti's main market has resulted in no findings, authorities confirmed earlier today. The incident, which stirred tension among market vendors and the public, began when an unidentified woman claimed to have witnessed the baby being discarded. This prompted vendors and passersby to search the waste container, but their efforts proved futile as no baby was found.

Stephen Omoding Eupa, the Assistant Resident City Commissioner of Soroti City, swiftly addressed the rumors, dismissing them as "fake rumors." He urged the public to refrain from spreading false information, which only fuels unnecessary panic and tension. Omoding noted that the source of the claim remains unidentified, suggesting an intent to mislead the public.

“We are aware of the rumors circulating about the alleged incident,” Omoding said. “There is no truth to these claims. We have launched an investigation into those responsible for spreading the misinformation, and those found guilty will face legal consequences.”

Jonathan Madonda, one of the vendors who helped search the dustbin, explained that the information came from a police officer stationed at the market. Madonda said they immediately began digging through the waste container upon hearing the report, but no baby or any evidence of such an incident was found.

The alarm was raised after the vendors were alerted to the alleged dumping, with some linking the claim to recent reports of infant killings in Soroti and the wider Teso sub-region. Fearing the worst, vendors and locals took action, notifying the authorities to investigate the matter.

The episode highlights the growing concern over the spread of misinformation and the challenges it poses to public safety and calm. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant, but to always verify information before sharing it.

“We understand that this is a sensitive issue, but we must stress the importance of relying on accurate information to avoid unnecessary panic,” Omoding emphasized. “Everyone has a role to play in ensuring that rumors do not disrupt the peace of our community.”

In light of this incident, local officials have called for heightened awareness on the dangers of false claims and the need for responsible communication in the public domain. The investigation into the spread of misinformation is ongoing, and authorities are determined to hold those accountable for inciting fear and confusion.

For now, Soroti remains on edge as the public eagerly awaits more information, but the authorities continue to urge calm while they work to address the issue.
