SOROTI – The family of Joan Faith Apio, a young pupil tragically murdered at a pit latrine in Jozan Nursery and Primary School, has raised serious concerns over the growing insecurity surrounding her grave.

Speaking before Grade One Magistrate Kibirige Justus Apollo in court today, the family revealed disturbing incidents where unknown individuals have been spotted arriving at the graveyard on motorcycles and inquiring about the grave’s location. These mysterious nighttime activities near Joan’s final resting place have fueled fears of potential foul play, with the family fearing that the grave may be disturbed.

In a bid to protect the grave from further disturbance, the family has been forced to hire local guards to monitor the site during the night. Despite these efforts, they are calling on the government to urgently intervene and provide stronger security measures to safeguard their daughter’s resting place from any further intrusion.

Outside the courtroom, a visibly distraught Everlyne Angel Akol, the grieving mother of Joan, appealed to the authorities to expedite the legal proceedings. She cited significant financial challenges, particularly the burden of transportation costs to and from court, adding to the already overwhelming emotional toll of the tragedy.

During the court session, Magistrate Kibirige adjourned the case to April 17th, instructing the family to report the security concerns to the State Attorney for further investigation and action. Meanwhile, defense counsel Mudawa Geoffrey of Kyogula Advocates requested that the hearing be expedited to ensure a swift resolution of the case.

As the legal process continues, the family remains hopeful that authorities will take swift action to address the security concerns surrounding Joan’s grave, while they await justice for their daughter's tragic death. The court will reconvene in two weeks for further proceedings.
