Soroti District – The recently concluded NRM mainstream elections in Soroti District have seen a dramatic reshaping of the party’s local leadership, with sitting Members of Parliament emerging as the biggest winners.

Hon. Herbert Edmund Ariko, the Member of Parliament for Soroti City, was overwhelmingly elected as the new NRM District Chairperson, securing 269 out of 381 votes. His closest rivals reportedly walked out during the voting process, effectively handing him an uncontested victory.

In his victory speech, Ariko expressed deep gratitude to the delegates and party members for the confidence placed in him. “What you saw today is a manifestation of unity, purpose, and hope. Soroti needs an NRM leadership that speaks to the challenges and aspirations of our people,” he said.

Ariko outlined a four-point agenda focusing on party unity, rebranding, lobbying for government inclusion, and establishing a formal district office for the NRM. He also addressed allegations of delegate manipulation, stating, “These are adults. They made their own decisions. The results show the will of the people.”

In another major win, Hon. Patrick Ayeku, Member of Parliament for Soroti County, was elected as the Vice Chairperson with 272 votes. Ayeku highlighted the strategic advantage Soroti now holds with two MPs leading the district NRM structure.

“This position connects us directly with the party’s top leadership. Together with Hon. Ariko, we now form a strong lobbying bloc that will push for development in health, education, and infrastructure in Soroti,” Ayeku said.

Adding youthful energy to the new leadership is Bob Owiny, the councillor for Tubur Sub-county, who was elected unopposed as the Secretary for Publicity and Mobilization. Owiny, also an aspirant for LC5 Chairperson, pledged to focus on grassroots mobilization and ensuring greater representation for the youth within the party.

“As the youngest member in the district mainstream, I stand as the voice of the youth. We will work to ensure NRM hits 80% support in Soroti in the next general elections,” Owiny remarked. He also pointed out the district’s lack of key appointments, including ministers and Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), promising to lobby for fair representation.

The Soroti District NRM registrar, James Egaru, confirmed the results and praised the peaceful conduct of the elections held at Core PTC in Asuret Sub-county.

With a new leadership team that blends experience, political muscle, and youthful energy, the NRM in Soroti District is expected to take on a more unified and strategic approach ahead of the 2026 general elections.
