Soroti District - In a move aimed at improving education standards in Gweri county, Abel Opolot, an independent candidate for Member of Parliament, has donated construction materials to various community schools across the constituency.
Early this week, Opolot visited Osuguro community nursery and primary school, where he delivered two trips of bricks and one trip of sand to support the school's infrastructure development. Another school, Telamot-Tukum community nursery and primary school, also benefited from the initiative, receiving one trip of bricks.
According to Opolot, his decision to intervene was prompted by the deplorable state of learning facilities in the area, where pupils are forced to study under shades that offer little protection from the elements. "I realized that pupils are studying under shades where learning can be interfered with by rain or wind, which is unacceptable," Opolot said. "This donation is part of my efforts to improve education standards in our constituency."
The donation was witnessed by Alex Omiat, chairperson of FDC Aukot sub-county, who commended Opolot for his support. "It's better to support a school than dishing out money to locals during this ongoing campaign," Omiat said.
Parents and school officials have welcomed the donation, hailing Opolot for demonstrating a commitment to development.
Emmanuel Ejangu, a parent, said Opolot's actions are a sign that his heart is in the right place. "Osuguro parish has no government-aided school, and we are asking the government to grant aid to Osuguro community nursery and primary school for the good of the future generation," Ejangu said.
Julius Opio, vice chairman of the PTA at Osuguro community school, called on other leaders to support their vision, saying, "The government should remember us and support our school."
Opolot's initiative has been praised as a step in the right direction, with many calling on other candidates to follow suit. As the campaign season heats up, Opolot's focus on development is set to resonate with voters in Gweri county.
