SOROTI - John Junior Ekutelek, the Soroti City Youth Councilor, officially announced his candidacy for the Member of Parliament (MP) position in the 2026 elections. This announcement was made during a burial ceremony in Acetigwen, attended by a large gathering of mourners.

“I will contest as MP for Soroti City East as there isn’t any MP currently in the division, and I shall face off with Hon. Attan and others who will come up,” Ekutelek stated emphatically.

According to him, his decision comes as a response to the current lack of MP representing the division thus emphasizing the need for a strong voice in Parliament.

Initially, Ekutelek had hinted at a run for city mayor in 2026, but after assessing the political climate, he pivoted to focus on the MP position. “Many have been saying that I shall contest as city mayor, but after looking around the division, I have realized we currently have no MP. I shall then contest as Member of Parliament to represent you,” he explained.

Ekutelek called for peaceful and respectful campaigning, urging all candidates and their supporters to engage in constructive dialogue. “We must focus on unity and respect as we approach this electoral period,” he asserted.

In addition to his political aspirations, Ekutelek took the opportunity to address a pressing social issue affecting the youth. He urged them to refrain from consuming packaged liquors, commonly known as waragi, highlighting its detrimental impact on lives. “I know some of you take it out of frustration, but nothing is permanent. There is a time for everything,” he cautioned.

With his affiliation to the NRM party, Ekutelek is poised to face off against the formidable candidate, Moses Attan Okia, also of the FDC, as well as other potential contenders as the upcoming election promises to be competitive, with different candidates looking to secure the trust and support of the electorate in Soroti City East.
