SOROTI – The Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) has approved a monumental architectural plan worth $15 million (about 55.5 billion UGX) for the construction of Ere Iteso, a cultural center poised to become a defining landmark in Teso. Designed by Oubuntu Architectural Designs, the impressive seven-story structure is set to house the Emorimor’s offices, cabinet spaces, a community hall, and a museum showcasing Teso heritage.
The ICU council gave the official nod to the ambitious plan on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at their offices in Soroti City. According to Oubuntu’s lead architect, Emmanuel Emechu, the design draws deeply from traditional Teso arts, intended to create a legacy that could endure for over a century, provided high-quality materials are used throughout construction.
“This plan is the first major step toward realizing Ere Iteso’s vision,” said Dr. Charles Peter Otim, chairperson of the committee formed last December to spearhead the project. The ICU has big hopes that the structure will become a cornerstone for the preservation of Teso culture and a hub for Iteso from across Uganda and the diaspora.
Once city authorities grant final approval, groundbreaking is expected on November 27, with the construction to be undertaken by the Army Engineering Brigade. This highly skilled team is anticipated to bring both precision and dedication to this symbolic project, contributing to its high standards.
ICU Council chairperson, Nosianta Emechu, encouraged clan leaders to step up resource mobilization efforts to ensure the project’s success. “This is a monumental achievement for our people,” she expressed, applauding the ICU council, cabinet, and project committee for their relentless commitment.
To cover the construction costs, ICU is planning a large-scale fundraising drive, both domestically and internationally. Dr. Pascal Osire, vice chairperson of the committee, highlighted the importance of this campaign to involve Iteso worldwide in bringing the Ere Iteso vision to life.
Government support has also come in strong. The Ministry of Teso Affairs has committed 250 million UGX, while the Ministry of Gender has pledged an additional $1.5 million (around 6 billion UGX) to the project. The ICU hopes that a community contribution model will also gain traction. With approximately 3.7 million Iteso in Uganda, each person contributing just 3,700 UGX (1 USD) could raise over 14 billion UGX, a proposal that has received enthusiastic backing from local leaders like Francis Eriaku.
The Ere Iteso cultural center, to be built on a one-hectare plot opposite Soroti Hotel, marks a new chapter in safeguarding Teso heritage. Not only will it be a cultural beacon, but also a place where future generations can connect with their roots, making it a powerful symbol of unity and pride for the Iteso people.
