Soroti District - Bob Owiny, the District Councilor for Tubur and aspirant for the Soroti District Local Council V seat, has urged students of Gweri Secondary School to resist the pressures of early sexual activity and instead focus on building a brighter future through education and self-discipline.
Owiny delivered a powerful message during a career guidance session at the school, where he addressed the students about the dangers of engaging in early sexual relationships. He emphasized that many young people are often misled by peers or adults with harmful intentions, exposing them to health risks and a disrupted future.
“There are individuals who will try to convince you that early sex is a sign of maturity. But that’s a lie. Engaging in such behaviors at a young age can ruin your future,” Owiny told the students. “When you value and respect yourself, you will make decisions that protect your health and secure your dreams.”
The councilor highlighted the significant risks associated with early sexual activity, including exposure to sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, unplanned pregnancies, and the potential for school dropouts. He cautioned the students that these risks can have long-lasting effects on their lives and futures.
Owiny also stressed the importance of setting goals and making choices that prioritize personal growth. “Your education is the key to unlocking your potential. The choices you make today will shape your tomorrow,” he said.
The career guidance session, which was attended by both students and teachers, was part of an ongoing initiative aimed at empowering youth in the community. Owiny's speech was met with applause from the students, who appreciated his candid advice.
As the session concluded, Owiny left the students with a message of hope and encouragement: “Stay focused, work hard, and never allow anyone to lead you astray. Your future is in your hands.”
