Police in Soroti City have uncovered an alleged illegal immigration document trade following an intelligence-led operation conducted in Orwadai Cell, Kengere, under Soroti East Division.
The operation was carried out after security agencies received credible reports from members of the public regarding the unlawful sale of passports and other immigration-related documents in the area. Acting on the information, officers mounted a targeted raid that led to the recovery of 261 passports and several immunisation cards suspected to have been intended for fraudulent use.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Saiga, the Regional Police Commander for East Kyoga, confirmed the development, stating that one suspect was arrested at the scene. The suspect is currently in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations. Authorities have withheld the identity of the individual as preliminary inquiries continue.
Saiga noted that investigators are working to establish the source of the recovered documents and determine whether a wider criminal network could be involved in the suspected illegal trade. He emphasized that document fraud undermines national security and public trust in official systems.
Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious or illegal activities to law enforcement agencies as investigations into the matter continue.
