The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has denied allegations circulating on social media that he was behind the demolition of structures near St. Balikuddembe Market.

Tayebwa clarified that although a plot in the Nakivubo area was once registered under his name, he relinquished ownership after the Kampala Capital City Authority acquired the land for public use.

He explained that he obtained the lease legally in 2018 after following all procedures and paying the required fees.

However, when he later sought approval for construction plans, KCCA informed him the land was needed for strategic development.

The authority subsequently compensated him and took possession of the land about three years ago.

Tayebwa said this means he has no legal claim or involvement in the property and therefore could not have participated in any eviction or demolition exercise there.

He also dismissed suggestions that his acquisition of the land was linked to his current office in the Parliament of Uganda.
