COSMESS Uganda and Jeressar High School have entered a strategic partnership aimed at equipping students with practical, income-generating skills to enhance their employability and entrepreneurial potential.
The collaboration marks a significant step toward strengthening vocational education at the secondary school level, as both institutions seek to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the demands of Uganda’s evolving job market.
While addressing students and staff at the school premises, Catherine Baatyo, Chief Executive Officer of COSMESS Uganda, said the initiative comes at a critical time when the country continues to produce many graduates, yet available employment opportunities remain limited.
She emphasized that the program is designed to nurture job creators rather than job seekers by providing learners with hands-on competencies that promote self-reliance and innovation.
“The future belongs to those who can create opportunities for themselves and others. By giving students practical skills early enough, we are preparing them to be productive and independent,” she noted.
The skilling program aligns with Uganda’s Competence-Based Curriculum, which encourages learners to acquire practical knowledge alongside academic instruction.
Under the partnership, students will receive hands-on training in various vocational fields, including tailoring and fashion design, hairdressing, automotive electrical works, welding and joinery, rabbit keeping, poultry farming, and building and concrete practice.
The training will focus on real-world application, with learners expected to undergo practical sessions and continuous assessment. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded certificates recognizing their acquired competencies.
The program will initially target Senior One (S1), Senior Two (S2), and Senior Three (S3) students, with each learner enrolling in a selected skill course at a fee of UGX 50,000 per term.
School administrators expressed optimism about the partnership, noting that it will play a vital role in shaping students into self-reliant individuals.
“Our students are prepared to come out of school as job makers and not job seekers. Through this partnership, a lot can be achieved,” the administration said in its remarks.
The school also announced that admissions are ongoing, encouraging parents and guardians to enroll their children as the institution expands both its academic and vocational offerings.
With this collaboration, COSMESS Uganda and Jeressar High School are setting a strong example of how educational institutions in Uganda can integrate practical skills training to prepare young people for sustainable livelihoods.
