SOROTI CITY – The Anglican community in Soroti Diocese has kick-started the 6th anniversary celebrations of Bishop Kosea Odongo’s consecration with a city-wide street cleaning campaign, signaling both spiritual and civic commitment to community development.

Hundreds of Christians from the Church of Uganda, Soroti Diocese, turned up in large numbers on June 11, 2025, to clean the streets of Soroti city in a symbolic act of service ahead of the bishop’s anniversary celebration, which is slated for June 15 at St. Peter’s Cathedral.

The cleanup effort marks the beginning of a week-long program designed not only to honor Bishop Odongo’s leadership but also to promote social responsibility and community unity. Bishop Odongo, who has served as the diocesan bishop since his consecration on June 16, 2019, officially flagged off the activities during the street cleaning exercise.

“As we prepare to mark six years of serving together, let us reflect Christ through cleanliness, unity, and service,” Bishop Odongo said during the launch. He called on city authorities and the broader Christian community to embrace and sustain hygiene and sanitation efforts beyond the celebrations, emphasizing clean environments as essential to public health and dignity.

This year’s anniversary is particularly significant, as it coincides with the near-completion of St. Peter’s Cathedral – a major diocesan construction project. The final celebration on Sunday is expected to feature a dedication or milestone event for the cathedral, drawing attendees from across the region.

In addition to the cleaning exercise, the diocese has organized a series of activities leading up to the main celebration that include:

June 12: Hospital cleaning outreach

June 13: A friendly football match between clergy and media personnel

June 14: A women’s run promoting health and unity

June 15: Main anniversary celebrations at St. Peter’s Cathedral

The initiative has drawn praise from local leaders. Moses Amolo, Soroti City Health Officer, lauded the Church’s continued support for public health efforts under the “Keep Soroti Clean” campaign.

“The Anglican Church has always demonstrated leadership beyond the pulpit. This cleanup drive is a clear example of faith in action,” Amolo noted.

Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community under the church’s guidance. Jessica Christine Akungo, one of the volunteers, praised Bishop Odongo’s leadership, calling him “a servant leader who inspires the community to work together for a better Soroti.”

The Church of Uganda, Soroti Diocese, continues to position itself as a key stakeholder in the city’s transformation, not only through spiritual growth but also by championing practical initiatives that improve residents' daily lives.

As the diocese prepares for Sunday’s grand celebration, Soroti's streets are cleaner and reflect the renewed spirit of togetherness and service that Bishop Kosea Odongo has instilled over the past six years.
