The Democratic Front Party (DF), a recently launched political outfit led by former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga popularly known as Okitoi in the Teso sub-region has made a bold entrance into the political landscape of Teso by nominating 41 candidates for party primaries ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The nominations, conducted at Shaan Garden in Serere District, were supervised by the party’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Lubowa Henry. The nominated candidates include aspirants for parliamentary seats, mayoral positions, district chairpersonships (LC V), and other local government council roles.
Lubowa described the exercise as a landmark achievement for the newly formed party and a significant step toward empowering communities in Teso. “This is a powerful opportunity we have given to the people of Teso. We believe this region has strong and capable leaders who are ready to bring positive change in governance and public service delivery,” he said.
He also commended the rising interest among women in participating in political leadership, noting that the party was especially encouraged by the increasing number of female aspirants stepping up to serve their communities.
Symbolized by a tree, the Democratic Front Party identifies its values as protection, shade, and comfort, ideals it says it will uphold for every citizen. The tree symbol, party officials note, reflects a promise of support and stability to communities that have long yearned for effective representation.
Among the key parliamentary contenders unveiled during the nomination exercise are Julius Ichoto Jeje for Kapir County, Otala Joseph Ebukelasi for Serere County, Pascal Amuriat (widely known as Etobait) for Soroti City East, Abeja Christine for Woman MP of Ngora District, and Ebiau Peter Carlos for Kasilo County in Serere District.
Speaking after his nomination, Otala Joseph Ebukelasi voiced frustration over what he termed the current leadership’s failure to deliver basic services in Serere County. “Our people deserve better. I’m ready to lead the fight for change and restore hope in Serere,” he declared.
Abeja Christine pledged to bring responsible and transparent leadership to Ngora District. She emphasized her commitment to attracting more government programs and ensuring the effective use of public resources to benefit the community.
Kapir County’s Julius Ichoto Jeje also pointed to poor service delivery as a persistent challenge in the region. “My biggest challenge isn’t my political opponent,it’s the lack of development. I want to fix that,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, Pascal Amuriat of Soroti City East condemned the deplorable state of infrastructure in the area, labeling it a “total mess.” He vowed to prioritize urban planning and physical infrastructure development if elected.
According to the party, most of the 41 aspirants are most likely to go unopposed in the party primaries, although nominations are still open to additional interested candidates. The high number of early nominations signals a growing enthusiasm for the DFP in a region that has long been a political battleground.
As campaigns gear up and political momentum builds, the Democratic Front Party’s full slate of candidates across Teso reflects a serious bid to challenge the traditional political order. With rising public dissatisfaction over governance and service delivery, the DFP is positioning itself as a fresh and viable alternative heading into the 2026 elections.
What began as a regional push in Teso may well mark the beginning of a broader national campaign, as the Democratic Front Party seeks to establish itself as a formidable force on Uganda’s political stage.
