Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump to review ongoing negotiations related to a long-anticipated trade agreement between India and the United States.
According to sources familiar with the call, both leaders expressed commitment to advancing discussions that have been in the works since Trump’s administration, focusing on market access, tariff reductions, and cooperation in key sectors like pharmaceuticals, defense, and technology.
The conversation signals a revival of diplomatic engagement on trade, despite changes in U.S. leadership since Trump left office in 2021. It also suggests that informal or backchannel efforts may be underway to keep strategic economic relations on track, especially as both leaders remain influential on the global stage.
While no formal pact has been finalized yet, India and the U.S. have worked to resolve multiple trade irritants over the years, including tariffs on agricultural products and medical devices, digital taxation issues, and India's eligibility under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP).
Modi and Trump reportedly agreed to maintain momentum and revisit previous proposals that could lay the groundwork for a comprehensive trade framework benefiting both economies.
