Teso — The ongoing investigations involving former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among have sparked a strong response from leaders of the Iteso Cultural Union, who are calling for fairness, transparency, and respect for cultural values during the legal process.
The investigations stem from allegations of illicit enrichment, possible breaches of Uganda Leadership Code Act, and concerns surrounding Among’s declared wealth and conduct while serving as Speaker of Parliament. Reports indicate that Inspectorate of Government (IGG) is reviewing complaints accusing the Bukedea District Woman MP of possible under-declaration of assets and unexplained accumulation of wealth.
The matter has intensified in recent days following reports of anti-corruption investigations and increased scrutiny over Among’s wealth, with some state agencies reportedly conducting inquiries into her financial declarations and leadership record.
In a statement issued Tuesday through the Office of the Senior Adviser for ICU Affairs, Iteso elders and cultural custodians said they were speaking on behalf of the wider Iteso community amid growing public attention surrounding the case.
The statement, released by Alloch William Akoll, acknowledged Among’s cooperation with investigators and praised her compliance with the ongoing legal procedures.
“We appreciate her compliance to the ongoing investigations,” the statement read.
The ICU also reaffirmed its support for accountability and the rule of law, recognizing the responsibility of the state to protect public resources and uphold justice.
“We appreciate the role of the state to hold its citizens accountable to the national resources and its people,” the elders stated.
However, the cultural institution urged authorities to ensure that the investigations are conducted in a transparent, professional, and balanced manner while safeguarding Uganda’s image internationally.
The elders further appealed for the process to be handled with fairness, dignity, and sensitivity to Iteso cultural values, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a humane approach throughout the investigations.
They also expressed hope for a swift conclusion of the matter and timely administration of justice.
Meanwhile, the ICU called upon members of the Iteso community and the general public to remain calm and peaceful as the investigations continue.
