A tragic accident in Kapir County, Ngora District, has left one student dead and several others hospitalized after falling from the roof bars of a Fuso truck registered as UBF 661A on Monday, March 23, 2026, at approximately 11:00 a.m.
The victims were students of Mukura Memorial Secondary School in Mukura Town Council, traveling to Ngora town for the regional qualifiers of the Uganda School Sports Association (USSSA) football tournament when the incident occurred.
According to official reports, the students were severely overcrowded on the truck, with several seated precariously on the metal roof bars—an unsafe and illegal mode of transport. As the vehicle moved along the rough terrain, the students lost balance and fell off, resulting in fatal and non-fatal injuries.
One student died on the spot, while several others sustained serious injuries. They have been admitted to Ngora Freddacar Hospital, where medical staff are providing emergency care.
South Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Mukombe, confirmed the incident and condemned the driver’s actions.
“This is a very unfortunate incident that could have been avoided. The driver acted irresponsibly by overloading the vehicle and allowing students to sit in dangerous positions,” ASP Mukombe stated. “This was a clear violation of road safety regulations.”
The driver of the Fuso truck (UBF 661A) fled the scene immediately after the crash and is currently at large.
ASP Mukombe reiterated the dangers of overloading and unsafe transportation of passengers, especially schoolchildren.
“We urge all transport operators to comply with road safety guidelines." ASP Mukombe said
