The Vicar General of Soroti Catholic Diocese, Rev. Fr. Robert Echogu, has urged students to confront what he described as the “leprosy of ignorance” by embracing education, faith, and moral discipline.

Fr. Ecogu made the call during a thanksgiving Mass held at Soroti Secondary School, where students, teachers, and parents gathered to celebrate academic achievements and reflect on the role of education in shaping society.

In his homily, the cleric drew parallels between biblical accounts of leprosy and the challenges facing modern students. He explained that, in ancient times, leprosy was not only a physical illness but also a condition that led to social exclusion and spiritual stigma. However, he noted that those affected found hope through their faith in God

.

“Hope is very important. The lepers courageously approached Jesus together, believing they could be healed,” Fr. Ecogu said, encouraging students to embrace unity, courage, and faith in overcoming life’s challenges.

He warned that while physical diseases remain a concern, ignorance poses an even greater threat to students today. According to him, lack of knowledge and guidance can limit opportunities and lead to poor decision-making.

“We are schooled to fight the leprosy of ignorance. When we overcome it, we are empowered to serve God and humanity better,” he emphasized.

Fr. Ecogu highlighted the critical role of education in transforming lives, describing teachers as instruments through whom God imparts knowledge and direction. He urged students to take their studies seriously and view education as a responsibility rather than a privilege.

The priest also cautioned against selfishness, noting that success should not be pursued at the expense of others. He encouraged learners to adopt a spirit of service and to pray not only for personal success but for the well-being of their communities.

“The God we serve is for all of us. The best prayer is one that seeks the good of everyone, not just yourself,” he said.

Addressing moral challenges affecting students, Fr. Ecogu warned against drug abuse, alcoholism, and irresponsible sexual behaviour, stating that such habits can derail ambitions and shorten futures. He urged learners to remain disciplined and resist peer pressure, particularly in rapidly changing social environments.

He further reminded students that education is not an end in itself but a means to serve others.

“Jesus heals so that we are restored to serve. Likewise, academic success should empower you to serve God and your community,” he noted.

Fr. Ecogu also called on students to remain grateful and humble, acknowledging the sacrifices made by their families to support their education. He warned that failure to use such opportunities wisely could turn beneficiaries into burdens.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. Use your knowledge to transform your family and community,” he advised.

He concluded by encouraging students to build positive relationships, support one another academically, and uphold strong moral values as they prepare for the future.
