The newly sworn-in LC5 Chairperson of Soroti District, Bob Owiny, has pledged to confront tribalism and corruption as part of his leadership agenda aimed at improving service delivery and unity within the district.
Speaking shortly after taking office, Owiny expressed concern over what he described as growing tribal divisions in the district, particularly between sections of the Kumam and Iteso communities. He revealed that during his campaign trail, he encountered several incidents where tribal sentiments were used to divide voters and influence political support.
Owiny emphasized that leadership should focus on uniting people rather than promoting ethnic differences. He pledged to ensure equal access to government services and development opportunities for all residents regardless of tribe, religion, or political affiliation.
The LC5 Chairperson also raised concern about corruption in the district, especially in the awarding and signing of government contracts. He warned that such practices continue to hinder development and deny residents quality public services. Owiny promised to strengthen transparency and accountability within district operations to restore public trust in local government institutions.
In his remarks, Owiny highlighted his previous recognition as one of Uganda’s best-performing male politicians, saying the award reflects his commitment to dedicated and people-centered leadership. He assured residents that he would use his experience and networks to lobby for major development projects in the district.
Among his priorities is advocating for the construction and improvement of Soroti District Hospital to enhance healthcare services for the people of Soroti and neighboring areas.
Owiny concluded by calling for unity and cooperation among leaders, civil servants, and residents, noting that collective effort is essential for the social and economic transformation of Soroti District.
