Fresh political intrigue has emerged within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) after Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth distanced himself from growing claims linking him to the Speakership of Uganda’s 12th Parliament.
The developments follow recent public remarks by Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who openly endorsed Oboth-Oboth for the powerful Speaker position through social media posts that quickly generated widespread political debate.
Muhoozi described Oboth-Oboth as a capable leader with strong government experience and suggested he would be the ideal candidate to steer Parliament during the new term.
However, as discussions intensified within political circles on Friday, Oboth-Oboth appeared to distance himself from the claims, saying he was not aware of any official endorsement connected to the Speakership race.
His remarks have injected fresh uncertainty into the contest for the top parliamentary seat, where several influential names are reportedly being considered within the NRM ahead of internal consultations.
The Speakership race has increasingly become one of the most closely watched political battles following the swearing-in of Members of Parliament for the 12th Parliament. Political observers believe the final outcome is likely to be shaped by internal party negotiations, caucus discussions, and power balancing within the ruling establishment.
