How domestic violence forced boy who read under street lights out of home

The story of a young boy whose picture went viral after being captured reading under streets lights in Katakwi town council and later getting a full scholarship to study till university was forced out of home over domestic violence.

 

Born in a family of five, Otenge Emmanuel hails from Apuuton village,Guyaguya sub county in katakwi sub-county together with his mother left their home in January, 2023 after cases of domestic violence between his father and mother rose up.

 

According to Otengei's mother while having an interview with this website, her husband became irresponsible thus making life complicated for her and the children.

 

"Some of the children are with relatives, I was able to come with two of my children to katakwi town to try and hustle, I was welcomed by the people here who also offered me a hut to live in with my children", she explained.

 

* She gets to support her children and her self by going to work in the restaurants in the market cooking and Washing plates where is paid 3,000 ugx daily that she uses to buy food and other basic needs.

 

" I didn't have hope that my son would get a scholarship from the vice president, he usually reads under the street light as the only torch we have is busy most times,I appreciate the support so much", she added.

 

The most excited Otengei told this website that he has been moving to read under the street light because the school is far as he move their daily.

 

He also explained that," I have been reading together with my two friends who include Abraham and Okwaput Gideon, I was working hard so that when I reach primary seven,pass well,I would also get awarded by the vice president who usually gives out gifts to the best performers in PLE in the district",

 

"That day it was only me, I was so excited to receive the vice president at home, I need to become an electrical engineer following what I have been going through so that I shall be able to connect all communities with electricity such that they don't pass through what I went through", he added.

 

He also added that although he has become popular at school, his friends feel bad cause of what happened to him thus advising them to relax as their own opportunity will come over one day.

 

Otengei who is currently studying in Katakwi town ship primary school in primary four says that he has never heard from his father from the time they moved to Katakwi town.

 

It should also be noted that, some people preceived that the photo was stage managed but Okubu James Peter popularly known as Yakobu in Katakwi town council who took the pic that fate ful day explained that the boys have always been reading under the street lights 

 

"Hon.peter Ogwang vowed to clear the boys school fees from which ever school he is till p7 when he completes the primary level then later the vice president came in and promised to handle the issues of his school till he gets done, I request mp Ogwang not to withdraw the pledge and let that money be converted into supporting the family like getting the mother a plot of land that she can put up a house of her own where she and her children can also live on", he narrated.
