SOROTI CITY – Rodney Mukula Akongel, a Member of Parliament aspirant for Soroti City East Division, has called on church leaders to actively promote wealth creation among Christians by encouraging engagement in agricultural and other income-generating activities.

While addressing Christians during a prayer service at St. Emmanuel Church of Uganda in Opuyo Ward, Mukula emphasized that spiritual growth should go hand in hand with economic empowerment. He noted that churches have a critical role to play in helping believers achieve self-sufficiency and break free from the cycle of poverty.

"Churches must be agents of change not just spiritually, but economically as well. Encouraging Christians to venture into productive activities like crop farming, livestock rearing, and poultry keeping will uplift families and strengthen our communities," Mukula said.

Highlighting the importance of economic resilience, Mukula stressed that promoting wealth creation within churches would lead to more stable and self-reliant congregations, ultimately contributing to the wider development of Soroti City.

Deeply moved by the sight of Christians praying under an incomplete roof, Mukula pledged personal support toward completing the roofing of St. Emmanuel Church. His gesture was warmly received by the congregation, who have long struggled to finish the church’s construction due to limited resources.

Michael Eyedu, LC1 Chairperson for Alaki Cell, appealed for additional support, explaining that despite tireless efforts by the faithful, the church building remains unfinished. James Olari, Chairperson of the Church Construction Committee, highlighted the urgent need for materials such as timbers, iron sheets, and nails to complete the roofing project.

Julius Epau, Chairperson of Planning at St. Emmanuel Church, expressed gratitude for Mukula’s commitment, acknowledging his dedication to both the physical and spiritual growth of the community.

Rev. Tom Otai, Parish Priest of Soroti Parish, also praised Mukula’s contributions, describing them as a reflection of true Christian leadership that seeks to uplift the lives of others.

Mukula’s message resonated with many, as it pointed to a growing movement that envisions churches not just as centers of worship, but as hubs for holistic community transformation, where faith and practical skills come together to build a better future.
