SOROTI - Police in Soroti City West are investigating a harrowing case of attempted murder and arson after a 30-year-old man allegedly tried to kill his 24-year-old ex-girlfriend by setting her house on fire.

The suspect, identified as Wakabi Eliot aged 30 years, reportedly sneaked into the home of his former girlfriend, Amola Conzy aged 24 years, on the early morning of September 24th, 2024.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. in Opiyai 'B' Cell, Opiyai Ward, Eastern Division, Soroti City. According to preliminary reports, Wakabi doused Conzy’s rented grass-thatched house with petrol before setting it ablaze.

Amola Conzy, who is self-employed, sustained severe burn injuries to her face, hands, chest, and abdomen but was miraculously rescued by a Good Samaritan. She is currently being treated at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where her condition remains critical but stable.

The police were alerted by an eye witness. The case has been registered under CRB 160/2024 of Soroti City West, and authorities are now calling for the public’s help in tracking down the suspect, who remains at large.

Police investigations reveal that Wakabi and Conzy had been in a relationship that ended bitterly, with the suspect allegedly threatening to kill her if she ever left him. Conzy had reported these threats to her local LC1 chairperson, who attempted to intervene but did not escalate the case to the police.

No arrests have been made so far, as the suspect is still on the run. Authorities are urging the public to provide any information that may lead to his capture.

"We call upon the members of the public to cooperate with us and avail us of the necessary information that can lead to the arrest of Wakabi Eliot," said ASP Obukulem Edison, the acting PRO of East Kyoga.

The police have also assured the victim’s family that they are working tirelessly to bring the suspect to justice and urged them to remain calm during this trying time. The investigation is ongoing, and police are hopeful that the suspect will be apprehended soon.
