SOROTI CITY - The political arena in Soroti City is bracing for a heated contest as the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) prepares for its Woman Member of Parliament (MP) primaries. The two leading contenders, incumbent MP Joan Acom Alobo and Soroti City Speaker Juliet Agonyo, are set to face off in what promises to be a defining moment for the party in the region.

Joan Acom Alobo: A Tenacious Incumbent

Joan Acom Alobo, currently serving as the Woman MP for Soroti City under the FDC banner, has earned a reputation as a resilient and vocal advocate in the 11th Parliament. Holding influential positions as the Vice Chairperson of the Teso Parliamentary Group and Secretary General of the FDC Youth League, Alobo has been an active player in shaping policy discussions, especially on matters of national development.

Alobo’s leadership has extended beyond legislative halls. She has been a staunch advocate for public health reforms, including efforts to eliminate the use of traditional birth attendants in favor of safer maternal health practices. Despite facing challenges such as confrontations with law enforcement and arrests during political activism, Alobo’s determination to fight for her constituents has remained unwavering.

Juliet Agonyo: The Grassroots Challenger

Juliet Agonyo brings over a decade of local government experience to the race. Currently serving as the Speaker of Soroti City Council, Agonyo is also the Treasurer of the Speaker's Association of Uganda, a role that underscores her leadership credentials at both local and national levels. Her career has been marked by a strong connection to the people, particularly in her work in the city’s East Division and at the city headquarters. Her grassroots support is a key asset as she enters the primaries, with a clear focus on addressing issues like women’s empowerment and community development.

As a leader, Agonyo has emphasized the importance of dismantling societal barriers that hinder women's progress. Her advocacy for women's rights and her leadership in local cultural and community events have further solidified her popularity among the electorate. Agonyo’s leadership style, deeply rooted in community-based initiatives, positions her as a challenger with a strong, local appeal.

The race between Alobo and Agonyo reflects a stark contrast in their leadership styles. Alobo, with her experience at the national level, brings a comprehensive understanding of policy-making and governance. Her assertiveness in confronting challenges, including her past confrontations with police, resonates with constituents seeking a bold and unapologetic representative.

On the other hand, Agonyo’s extensive experience in local governance, coupled with her role as Treasurer of the Speaker's Association of Uganda, gives her a unique advantage in connecting with Soroti’s residents. Her focus on women’s issues, community development, and cultural engagement paints her as a leader deeply invested in addressing the everyday needs of her constituents.

Ethnic Dynamics: A Crucial Factor in Soroti’s Elections

The ethnic diversity in Soroti City adds another layer of complexity to the primaries. Alobo, of Kumam heritage, has strong support in the western regions of the city, while Agonyo, representing the Iteso community, appeals to a broader voter base, including Baganda and Gishu communities. Both candidates will need to secure a coalition that transcends ethnic lines to succeed in this highly competitive race.

FDC’s Stronghold in Soroti

The FDC has long been a dominant political force in Soroti and the broader Teso sub-region. Known for fielding robust candidates, the party’s strategic mobilization efforts, led by President Patrick Oboi Amuriat, are set to play a pivotal role in the upcoming primaries. The outcome will not only determine the party’s flag bearer but also influence its strategy for the general elections.

Looking Ahead: What’s at Stake for the FDC

As the FDC primaries approach, the contest between Alobo and Agonyo is poised to shape the future of Soroti’s political landscape. The outcome will have far-reaching implications for the party’s prospects in the upcoming general elections. Observers and supporters are watching closely to see whether the primaries will result in a unified party, or if either candidate will consider an independent bid, potentially altering the political dynamics in Soroti City.

With both candidates vying for the chance to represent FDC in the general elections, these primaries serve as a crucial test for the party’s internal cohesion and its ability to retain its influence in one of Uganda’s most politically competitive regions.
