SERERE - A 24-year-old fisherman has died following a mob attack in Madaka Village, Kabulabula Parish, Kadungulu Sub County, Serere District. The victim, identified as Ejangu Julius, was allegedly caught stealing smoked fish in the early hours of January 21, 2025.
The case, recorded as CRB 041/2025 at Serere Central Police Station, was reported by Olupot Sam, a 40-year-old resident of Madaka Village. According to police, the deceased was accused of stealing smoked fish belonging to Okwana David, a local resident. Okwana raised an alarm, prompting neighbors to pursue Ejangu, who was then assaulted by the mob. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Scene of Crime Officer and homicide team visited the location to gather evidence. Eleven pieces of smoked fish were recovered, and the deceased's body was transported to Serere Health Center IV Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
No arrests have been made so far. Speaking on the incident, East Kyoga Regional Police Commander Damalie Nachuha condemned the mob justice, stating: “I highly condemn acts of violence that lead to loss of life.”
She urged the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands and to report suspected crimes to law enforcement to allow for proper investigation and legal proceedings.
