SOROTI – Police in the East Kyoga region have intensified their investigation into the tragic death of a pupil at Jozan Nursery and Primary School in Soroti city, leading to the excavation of a pit latrine on the school premises.
The school was indefinitely closed following the shocking discovery of Joan Faith Apio’s body in the latrine on February 16, 2025 by the authorities in the city. Apio, a young pupil, was laid to rest on February 18, 2025, as the community mourned and demanded justice for her untimely death.
Today, officers from the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID), assisted by the fire brigade, carried out an excavation operation at the pit latrine in search of crucial evidence.
A large crowd of concerned community members gathered outside the school fence, anxiously watching the police activity.
Following the incident, an sparked outrage and fear, with parents and guardians questioning the safety measures in schools.
Speaking on the matter previously in a press statement, Regional Police Commander Damali Nachuha assured the public that the investigation was progressing. “We are determined to establish the circumstances surrounding Apio’s death and hold anyone responsible accountable,” she stated.
The police have urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward, emphasizing that the findings from the excavation will be crucial in uncovering the truth behind Apio’s death.
This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting calls for increased vigilance in schools to ensure the safety and well-being of all children.
As part of the ongoing investigation, several school staff members, including the director Joseph Okedi, his wife Suzan Vivian Okedi, the headteacher, matron, a police office and others were arrested. They appeared in court for mention and were further remanded as investigations continue.
