Soroti – A devastating fire tore through Amukaru Cattle Market in Arapai, Soroti City this evening, completely destroying over 100 businesses, including bars, restaurants, and various stalls. The blaze, which swept through the market, has left traders and their families devastated and without means to sustain their livelihoods.
Amukaru Market, a key commercial hub that operates every Thursday, attracts traders from across the Teso sub-region and beyond. Known for its vibrant trading activity, the market is a vital source of income for many families in the region.
John Baptist Emukoki, the Councilor for Aloet Ward in Soroti East Division and Chairperson of the Social Services Committee, expressed his concerns about the destruction. “It’s deeply concerning that so many individuals have lost their businesses, especially during a time when the economic situation is already challenging,” Emukoki said. “More than 100 people are now unable to conduct business because their premises have been completely destroyed.”
The cause of the fire remains unclear, but initial reports suggest that it may have been ignited by a discarded cigarette or another possible source. Authorities are conducting investigations to determine the exact cause.
Local officials have pledged to support the affected traders, but the scale of the loss means that recovery will take considerable time and effort.
