Ngora District - In a significant step toward improving access to clean water in Ngora District, local leaders and community members have launched a water project aimed at supplying Akeit Primary School with safe, reliable water through a solar-powered system.

The initiative, which took place in Akeit Cell, Akeit Ward, Mukura Town Council, was spearheaded by Julius Engeku, the parliamentary aspirant for Kapir County. Engeku joined residents on the ground to dig water channels that will lay the foundation for the pipeline connecting a nearby swamp to the school.

Speaking at the launch, Engeku emphasized the importance of clean water in promoting education and health. “This initiative reflects our shared responsibility in ensuring children have access to basic needs like clean water. It’s not just about infrastructure, it’s about dignity and opportunity,” he said.

The project was made possible through a donation from the Tonda Foundation, secured through the lobbying efforts of Ngora District Chairperson Mike Odongo Lo’Asion. The foundation responded after residents expressed concern over the long distances pupils traveled daily in search of water.

Engeku contributed to the effort by supplying construction materials such as cement, bricks, and sand, while also physically participating in the manual digging process with local volunteers.

James Peter Oriada, the LC1 Chairperson of Akeit Cell, hailed the effort as a transformative intervention. “This is a milestone for our community. Our pupils will no longer miss class or suffer due to lack of clean water,” he said.

Patrick Ojulong, Chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association at Akeit Primary School, applauded the partnership between the community and leaders. “This water project is a game-changer. We thank all those who made this possible,” he added.

Community members, especially parents, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to a project that prioritizes the well-being and education of their children. Many turned up with tools to assist in digging and clearing the pipeline route.

The solar-powered water system is expected to be completed in the coming weeks and will serve both the school and surrounding households. Once operational, it will reduce the risks associated with drinking unsafe water and free up learning time for pupils who previously spent hours fetching water.

The Akeit project stands as a testament to what can be achieved through grassroots collaboration, visionary leadership, and responsive development support.
