Soroti City — Jeressar High School has proudly secured its place in the second round of the highly competitive TBS Skool Debate, an exciting youth-centered initiative powered by TBS Radio. The event, which kicked off its inaugural season this month, has drawn participation from more than 17 secondary schools across Soroti City.
Hosted at Jeressar High School's main hall, the latest round saw students from various schools battle it out in a showcase of eloquence, critical thinking, and research skills. Among the participating institutions were Cranes High School, Hadassa Christian School, Soroti Secondary School, Aloet Parents Secondary School, and Immaculate Girls Secondary School.
Jeressar High School faced off against Cranes High School in a riveting debate on the motion:
“Leaders who don’t deliver their promises shouldn’t be re-elected.”
The host school emerged victorious, impressing judges and attendees alike with their confident presentation, persuasive arguments, and in-depth research.
Other key matchups included:
Hadassa Christian School vs. Soroti Secondary School – debating: “Government should prioritize the use of renewable energy over fossil fuels.”
Aloet Parents Secondary School vs. Immaculate Girls Secondary School – debating: “Standardized testing should be abolished in the new curriculum.”
Mr. Oonyu Moses, Deputy Headteacher I of Jeressar High School, applauded the initiative:
“We commend TBS Radio for this great platform. It enables our students to grow in confidence, showcase their talents, and engage meaningfully with relevant societal issues. Hosting the debate has been an honour.”
TBS Radio Manager, Mr. Dabia Noah, emphasized the platform’s role in youth empowerment:
“This debate began as an idea on radio, but we wanted to bring it to life. It’s not just about winning — it’s about empowering young minds, promoting intellectual exchange, and preparing the youth to shape the future. We’re also offering them the opportunity to speak live on air for four hours — their voices matter.”
The atmosphere inside Jeressar's main hall was electric as the chief adjudicator announced the school's advancement to round two. The audience erupted in applause, celebrating the team’s accomplishment.
Chief Adjudicator John Baptist Emutu also offered practical advice to the debaters:
“Discipline and time management are crucial. Relying too much on the internet can weaken your research abilities. Focus on understanding the motion and build arguments from a strong knowledge base.”
Mr. Ocen Joseph, the school’s Debate Patron, expressed his pride in the students:
“These young people have demonstrated commitment, focus, and exceptional research skills. I’m proud of their teamwork and look forward to seeing them excel in the next round.”
As the first season of the TBS Skool Debate continues to unfold across different schools, Jeressar High School remains a strong contender, inspiring peers and proving that intellectual rigor is alive and well among today’s youth.
