Soroti, Uganda – As the 2026 general elections draw closer, political temperatures in Soroti City East are rising — and a new name is quickly becoming the center of attention. John Junior Okwii Ekutelek, currently serving as a youth councilor on the Soroti City Council, has officially declared his bid for Parliament under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket.
His entry into the race is already shaking the foundation of traditional expectations, positioning him against well-established political heavyweights in what promises to be one of the most closely watched contests in the region.
Known for his bold rhetoric, high-energy mobilization, and a strong reformist message, Ekutelek is presenting himself as the face of a new generation of leadership — one that is grounded in action, accountability, and grassroots transformation.
“I’m not here to play politics. I’m here to defeat dysfunction and deliver results,” - Ekutelek stated in a recent interview.
At the heart of Ekutelek’s campaign is a promise to restore broken public service systems, particularly in healthcare and youth development. Among his flagship pledges is the rehabilitation of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, which he describes as a critical step toward equitable health access.
He also aims to tackle youth unemployment by promoting vocational skills training, entrepreneurship support, and increased access to start-up capital, signaling a practical and inclusive approach to economic empowerment.
Perhaps what sets Ekutelek apart is his firm stance on accountability and transparency in governance — a message that has resonated strongly with younger voters. He has pledged to champion anti-corruption efforts, including investigations into his own office if elected.
“You can’t demand accountability from others if you can’t apply it to yourself. I will lead by example,”- he emphasized.
While some critics question whether his youthful ambition can stand up to the political experience of veteran contenders, Ekutelek remains unfazed. His growing grassroots support and appeal among the youth suggest a brewing wave of change that could redefine Soroti City East’s political future.
“The people are ready for change, and so am I,” - Ekutelek declared confidently.
As the NRM primaries near, Soroti City East is gearing up for a high-stakes political showdown - one that could usher in a new chapter in the region’s leadership.
