SERERE - The National Resistance Movement (NRM) is facing growing scrutiny over its internal electoral processes following the arrest and remand of William Olir, the party’s registrar for Serere district, on serious forgery-related charges.
On Thursday, July 24, 2025, the Serere Grade One Magistrates Court remanded Olir to Serere Government Prison after he was accused of falsifying election declaration forms during the recent NRM primaries.
Olir, dressed in a yellow long-sleeved shirt during his court appearance, is alleged to have manipulated the results of the Pingire County primary elections held on July 17, 2025. According to the prosecution, led by State Attorney Paul Okello, Olir unlawfully altered vote tallies at the NRM tally center in Serere district.
Central to the case is the accusation that Olir falsely declared Peter Paul Emaju as the NRM flag bearer for Kasilo County, despite Emaju not being the legitimate winner. Olir has strongly denied the charges, maintaining his innocence as pressure mounts from both the legal system and the public.
The case was initiated following formal complaints by two rival candidates—Peter Ojiit, who contested the Pingire County seat, and Esther Lucy Acom, who ran for Serere District Woman Member of Parliament. Both candidates expressed dissatisfaction with the credibility of the electoral process, citing the alleged fraud as a serious blow to the integrity of the NRM’s internal democracy.
The next court hearing is scheduled for August 5, 2025, with observers both within and outside the party watching closely.
The case has sparked broader debate over the transparency and accountability of the NRM’s internal elections, raising tough questions about the party's commitment to democratic principles.
