Latif Abdul has secured a sweeping victory in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries for the Soroti City East Division mayoral race, decisively defeating his rival Ramathan Bogere. The election, closely watched as a bellwether for local political sentiment, ended with Abdul garnering 6,892 votes, while Bogere, the current Speaker of the Soroti City East Division Council, managed just 1,425.

The results were announced by Justine Okello, the NRM Electoral Commission Returning Officer for Soroti, who confirmed Abdul's overwhelming lead. The outcome establishes Abdul as the official NRM flagbearer heading into the 2026 general elections, a critical step in a region viewed as a strategic stronghold for the ruling party.

In his post-election remarks, Abdul expressed deep appreciation to his supporters for their trust and commitment. He praised the strong voter turnout and the peaceful conduct of the primaries, emphasizing the need to sustain the momentum through to the national elections. He urged party members and voters to remain united and vigilant, stressing that the primary win was just the beginning.

“We must continue working together until we achieve victory in the general election,” Abdul said. “This win is a demonstration of your confidence in a new direction for Soroti City East.”

Abdul also issued a warning to those attempting to interfere with democratic processes, calling for respect, fairness, and discipline in all political engagements. He highlighted the importance of opening space for new leadership and ensuring that elections reflect the will of the people.

Looking ahead to the general election, Abdul outlined his vision for transforming Soroti City East. He pledged to prioritize development, service delivery, and inclusive governance, arguing that the city has long needed responsive leadership capable of driving progress. He urged voters to make informed choices, noting that competent leadership is key to unlocking the division’s full potential.

“If people vote wisely, our city will develop like other regions that are benefiting from effective leadership,” he stated. “I am ready to deliver real change.”

With the NRM flag in hand, Abdul now begins the next phase of his campaign, aiming to broaden his support across Soroti City East. His commanding primary victory has energized his base and positioned him as a strong contender ahead of the 2026 national polls.
