His Highness Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng, the Emorimor of the Iteso, officially launched the Ateker Gallery in Akalabai Village, Atutur Sub-county in Kumi District, marking a significant step toward cultural preservation and education in the Teso sub-region. The gallery, developed by Mr. Okuta John, is designed to serve as a living classroom where visitors, particularly young people, can learn about the rich cultural heritage of the Iteso people.

The Ateker Gallery features a detailed map tracing the historical migration of the Iteso from Abyssinia, alongside displays of traditional local brews, indigenous foods, granaries, and other cultural artifacts. The site also offers experiential activities such as bird watching, boating, and rock art tours, all intended to immerse visitors in the physical and historical context of Iteso life.

While addressing attendees at the launch, Emorimor Emolot praised the initiative as a vital contribution to cultural revival. He expressed deep appreciation to Mr. Okuta for his vision and commitment to promoting cultural education. Emorimor emphasized that many young people today are disconnected from their roots, and such projects are essential in restoring cultural identity. He announced plans to support the gallery through hosting cultural events at the site, which would further engage the community and attract national attention.

“This initiative has greatly impressed me. It aligns perfectly with our mission to safeguard the values, practices, and knowledge systems of the Iteso people. Culture played a central role in our development as a society, and this gallery will serve as a tool for educating the next generation,” said Emorimor.

Andrew Ocole, Prime Minister of the Iteso Cultural Union, noted that the gallery would be profiled as a cultural exhibition site to be submitted to the Ministry of Tourism. He said this effort would ensure that the site gains national recognition and contributes to Uganda’s broader cultural tourism agenda.

Osekenye Charles Peter, Chairman of the Ateker Itekok, commended the Emorimor for personally supporting grassroots efforts to promote culture. He highlighted the importance of leadership in mobilizing communities around heritage preservation.

In his remarks, Mr. Okuta John, the gallery’s founder, expressed his gratitude for Emorimor’s presence and support. He reiterated his hope that the gallery would inspire pride among the Iteso and serve as a permanent resource for cultural education.

The Ateker Gallery is now open to the public and is expected to become a regional hub for cultural tourism and learning.
