Bukedea: Independent candidate Opejo Silas, contesting under the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) — a movement affiliated with the NRM party — has pledged a transformative and inclusive leadership style aimed at empowering the people of Bukedea County.
Opejo made the remarks shortly after his nomination on Thursday at Kakere Primary School, where hundreds of supporters turned up to witness the event.
In his address, Opejo acknowledged the challenges facing many families in Bukedea who have invested heavily in educating their children but continue to face high levels of unemployment. He vowed that once elected, he will ensure that every household in the county has a “pillar” — someone directly working with his office to improve family welfare and access to opportunities.
“Most families have tried their best to educate their children, but there are no jobs. My leadership will focus on empowering each household to become self-reliant,” Opejo told his supporters.
He emphasized his plan to promote hands-on skills training for both youth and women, providing them with start-up capital and tools to help them generate income and sustain their livelihoods.
Touching on the state of education in Bukedea, Opejo noted that while the district has many schools, a large number of learners drop out before completing Senior Four (S4) or Senior Six (S6). He pledged to ensure that all learners have the support they need to stay in school. As part of his first 100 days in office, he promised to establish a resource centre dedicated to improving access to educational and vocational opportunities.
On community development, Opejo urged SACCO groups to remain active and organized, noting that he plans to channel his official vehicle allowance toward purchasing hand-walking tractors to support community-based projects.
“I believe in working with organized groups because development is easier and more transparent when people are united under one purpose,” he added.
Opejo also pledged to lobby for improved healthcare services across Bukedea County, promising equitable access to quality health care without discrimination.
He called on the youth to take an active role in shaping the county’s future by registering for National IDs and turning out in large numbers to vote.
The rally, which drew a spirited crowd, was later crowned with a lively traditional Akogo performance, showcasing Bukedea’s rich cultural heritage.
