Soroti City — NRM parliamentary candidate David Calvin Echodu has unveiled an ambitious development agenda aimed at transforming Soroti City West, focusing on infrastructure, social services, youth empowerment, and economic growth. The announcement came as Retired Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu publicly endorsed Echodu, describing him as the only leader committed to unity, development, and genuine service to the people of Teso.
Elwelu made the remarks during Echodu’s well-attended campaign rally at Amen Primary School in Amen Ward, where hundreds of supporters gathered in what has become one of the most closely watched political contests in the region.
“This coming election is for development and unity, not for division, lies, corruption, or fighters. Those fighting government are fighting development. Those spreading lies are afraid of those who speak the truth,” Elwelu said.
He emphasized that Echodu is the only candidate promoting harmony among youths, elders, and all communities, contrasting him with leaders who “use voters like ladders to climb into power and later forget them.” Elwelu, who also revealed he is a registered voter in Soroti City West, urged residents to turn out in large numbers and vote for Echodu and all NRM candidates.
Speaking at the rally, Echodu stressed that Soroti City West possesses immense untapped potential and requires visionary leadership to achieve economic growth and improved service delivery.
“Soroti City West deserves a development-focused approach that puts people first. We cannot keep lamenting over poor roads, unemployment, and inadequate service delivery,” Echodu said.
“We need leaders who listen, act, and deliver. I am committed to ensuring Soroti City West residents see real results,” Echodu added.
Many residents welcomed Echodu’s plans, citing long-standing concerns over poor infrastructure and limited opportunities.
“We have suffered with poor roads and dirty drainage. A leader who prioritizes development is what we need,” said Odongo Nelson, a resident of Amen Ward.
Soroti City NRM Chairperson and head of Echodu’s campaign task force, John Enomu, praised Echodu’s consistent grassroots engagement and predicted a shift in political momentum toward the NRM.
Elwelu’s endorsement, combined with Echodu’s bold development plan, has energized the campaign, reinforcing the candidate’s message of unity, accountability, and progress. Echodu urged supporters to remain peaceful during the campaign and to focus on constructive participation.
“Building Soroti City West is not the work of one leader; it is a partnership with every citizen who believes in progress,” Echodu said.
With Soroti’s elevation to city status, Echodu and his supporters argue that the constituency has a rare opportunity for economic renewal, especially in agriculture, manufacturing, and value addition, sectors that are already attracting investor interest.
