Police in Soroti have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of Omongole Hosseini Godi, months after the killing of the local leader sent shockwaves through Usuk Cell in Soroti City Division East.

The Regional Police Commander for East Kyoga, Ibrahim Saiga, confirmed the development, stating that the suspect was apprehended following sustained intelligence-led operations. He said security teams had been closely monitoring the movements of the suspect, who had reportedly gone into hiding shortly after the incident.

Godi, who served as Defence Secretary of Usuk Cell in Kichinjaji Ward, was killed on 27 October 2025. His death prompted an immediate response from police, who launched investigations and arrested several individuals in connection with the case. However, the alleged mastermind, identified as Gerald Oyu, managed to evade authorities for months by frequently changing locations.

“Through sustained intelligence efforts, our teams were able to track him down and smoke him out of his hideout,” Saiga said, noting that the operation marked a significant breakthrough in the case.

Police said the suspect is currently in custody and will face charges related to the ongoing murder investigations. Authorities further disclosed that Oyu has other active criminal files, including allegations of defilement and illegal possession of opium, which are being handled under separate investigations.

Saiga reassured residents that the police remain committed to ensuring that all those implicated in the killing are brought before the courts. He emphasized that securing justice for the late Godi remains a priority as investigations continue.
