Police in Soroti City are investigating circumstances under which a suspected firearm was abandoned at Apalatunga Bridge along the Soroti–Moroto Highway on the night of May 7, 2026.

According to the Regional Police Commander for East Kyoga, Ibrahim Saiga, officers attached to East Division Police responded to the scene at around 9:25 p.m. following reports from members of the public about a suspicious object believed to be a gun.

A joint security team was immediately dispatched to the area to assess the situation. Upon examination, the officers recovered what was later identified as a toy gun improvised from elephant grass and smeared with mud to resemble a real firearm. The item was documented and taken as an exhibit to support ongoing investigations.

Police noted that the area around Apalatunga Bridge is considered a security black spot, raising concerns that the fake weapon could have been intended for use in a planned robbery or criminal activity that was later abandoned.

Security patrols along the highway and surrounding areas have since been intensified. Police have urged residents and road users to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious individuals or activities to authorities promptly.
