AMURIA DISTRICT – With the return of seasonal rains across parts of the country, Orungo County aspiring Member of Parliament, Teddy Anyuk Osire, has called on farmers in the Teso sub-region to make the most of the early showers by planting fast-maturing food crops.

In an exclusive interview, Anyuk emphasized the urgency of embracing early planting due to shifting and unpredictable weather patterns. She encouraged farmers to focus on crops like potatoes, maize, and soya beans, which are not only fast-maturing but also help ensure early food security.

“We all know that it's now hard to predict when rains will begin or end, unlike in the past when February marked the start of the planting season. I want to challenge the people of Teso, especially the beloved residents of Orungo, to make sure they plant something now,” she urged.

Anyuk highlighted the pivotal role of agriculture in transforming livelihoods in Teso, stressing that with proper planning and effort, the region has the potential to become a significant food supplier to other parts of Uganda.

“Teso has vast fertile land that can support all types of agriculture, including the President’s Four-Acre Model Initiative aimed at transitioning Uganda to a money economy. We can do better than other regions. Let’s take advantage of government support like the Parish Development Model (PDM) funds. This is an opportunity no previous government has ever given,” she added.

Currently, Anyuk is traversing various sub-counties in Orungo, meeting SACCOs and savings groups to promote self-sustenance and community empowerment. Her grassroots mobilization campaign has received praise and growing support from the locals.

Since declaring her candidacy for Parliament, she has championed numerous development projects, initiatives that many locals say had never been witnessed since Orungo was carved out of the greater Amuria District.

The upcoming political battle between Anyuk and Foreign Affairs Minister General Jeje Odongo, the incumbent MP, is anticipated to be intense. However, political analysts and local speculation suggest that Anyuk’s popularity and hands-on approach could shift the political balance in her favor.

Recently, she called on the electorate to vote based on performance rather than promises.

“The time for empty talk is over. Orungo is yearning for true leadership,” she stated.

As party primaries approach, Anyuk’s influence continues to surge. Observers note that her rising momentum and solid support base position her as a formidable contender in the race for Orungo County’s parliamentary seat.
