Soroti City – Political tensions are rising in Soroti as Juliet Agonyo, the current Speaker of Soroti City Council and a prominent member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), has officially declared her intention to contest for the Soroti City Woman Member of Parliament seat in the forthcoming general elections.

Agonyo’s announcement sets the stage for a high-stakes battle within the FDC, as she prepares to face off against the incumbent Woman MP, Joan Alobo, in the party primaries. Her bold entry into the race has sparked conversations around leadership delivery and performance within the city.

In an exclusive interview, Agonyo expressed strong confidence in her candidacy, citing her vast experience in leadership and dedication to public service as key strengths that qualify her to represent the women of Soroti City in Parliament.

“I am not afraid because I believe I have what it takes to lead and deliver effective service to the people of Soroti,” she affirmed.

Agonyo emphasized her readiness to offer a more hands-on and transformative leadership, implying that the current leadership lacks the practical engagement needed to push Soroti City forward.

Having begun her political journey in 2011, Agonyo has served two consecutive terms as the Speaker of Soroti City Council. Prior to that, she was a women’s councilor for Soroti District, before the municipality attained city status. Her extensive service has given her insight into both grassroots and administrative structures.

Beyond her local contributions, Agonyo also holds a national role as the Treasurer for all Speakers across the country - a position that underscores her leadership credentials on a broader scale.

“My leadership journey has taken me through various levels - from district to national. Each step has equipped me with the skills and networks necessary to effectively represent Soroti at the parliamentary level,” she said.

Her campaign places a spotlight on community development and women’s empowerment. She identified poor road infrastructure in Soroti City as a major challenge that requires proactive and connected leaders to address.

“The state of roads in Soroti is very poor. We need leaders who can effectively network with development partners—something that is lacking in the current leadership,” she noted.

She also pointed out the dire condition of the Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, which she says lacks adequate facilities. Agonyo believes that with the right representation, there are significant opportunities for lobbying and attracting resources to improve essential services.

With her extensive leadership background, commitment to community welfare, and strategic vision, Juliet Agonyo presents herself as a strong contender poised to bring new energy and accountability to Soroti City’s representation in Parliament.
