Soroti District — National Resistance Movement (NRM) veteran and Special Presidential Advisor, Charles Elasu, has withdrawn from the Soroti District NRM Chairmanship race amidst swirling allegations that he accepted a UGX 100 million bribe to pave way for another contender.

The elections, slated for Friday, May 23, 2025, at Soroti Core Primary Teachers’ College in Asuret, were set to feature a highly competitive lineup until Elasu’s surprise decision, which has sparked widespread speculation and debate.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Elasu refuted claims spreading across social media—particularly WhatsApp platforms in the Teso sub-region—alleging that he had been paid off to step aside in favor of Hon. Herbert Edmund Ariko, Member of Parliament for Soroti City East Division.

The rumors suggested that Soroti District leaders, including Edoru Simon and Eumu, orchestrated Elasu’s visit to Parliament on May 21, 2025, where the alleged deal was reportedly struck.

“These reports are false, malicious, and intended to destroy my character,” Elasu said emotionally. “I did not receive any money, let alone UGX 100 million, from anyone. I met with the Speaker of Parliament purely on official matters, not political transactions.”

Elasu emphasized that his political journey within the NRM has been guided by principles of integrity, transparency, and unity. While confirming he had indeed traveled to Kampala, he insisted it was for official purposes unrelated to the chairmanship race.

“These are the works of desperate individuals who seek to drag my name into the mud. My political life is an open book. I have never sold my conscience, and I never will,” he said.

Though he did not formally announce a complete withdrawal from politics, Elasu indicated that he is taking time to reflect on the situation and will communicate his final position in due course. He, however, reassured party members that any decision he makes will be in the interest of party unity.

Elasu used the opportunity to reaffirm his allegiance to the NRM and expressed his support for the “Team New Energy” faction led by Calvin Echodu, who is seeking the position of National Vice Chairperson (Eastern Region) on the Central Executive Committee (CEC).

“I remain a steadfast NRM leader. My values and political beliefs align with the progressive ideals that Team New Energy represents,” he said.

With Elasu stepping aside, the Soroti District NRM Chairmanship race now features three main contenders: Hon. Herbert Edmund Ariko Okworo, Justine Owoja Edeku, and Moses E. Eriau.

According to the district NRM registrar James Egaru, the election will be conducted by lining up behind candidates, a method the party has adopted to enhance transparency. Voting will begin after verification at 9:00 AM and close by 2:00 PM.
