SOROTI CITY - In a significant move aimed at addressing the spiritual needs of both patients and medical staff, the Rt. Rev. Kosea Odongo, Bishop of the Church of Uganda Diocese of Soroti, has officially commissioned a new Anglican chapel at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.

The facility, now named All Saints Chapel, was inaugurated following persistent calls from health workers and patients for a dedicated place of worship within the hospital.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Bishop Odongo emphasized the chapel’s vital role in offering spiritual support, prayer, and reflection. “This chapel will be a sacred space where patients, caregivers, and staff can find comfort, strength, and hope through prayer and worship,” he said.

The bishop also noted that the launch of the chapel coincided with the celebration of his sixth anniversary as bishop of the Soroti Diocese. As part of the event, Bishop Odongo visited several hospital wards, where he and his team distributed essential items such as soap and sugar to patients.

He further stressed the convenience the chapel will offer to hospitalized patients who previously faced challenges in accessing places of worship, especially on Sundays. “This chapel brings God’s presence closer to the sick and those who serve them. They no longer have to travel far to seek spiritual nourishment,” he added.

Ben Watmon, Director of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, hailed the initiative as timely and meaningful. “Although the bishop’s visit also marked his anniversary, this chapel is a welcome development that will greatly benefit Anglican patients and staff. It’s a step forward in ensuring holistic care at the hospital,” he said.

Health workers at the hospital have expressed deep appreciation to Bishop Odongo for responding to their long-standing request. Many believe that the chapel will not only serve those on duty during weekends but will also play a vital role in the healing process. “Prayer is a source of strength, and we believe spiritual support complements medical care. This chapel is an answered prayer for many of us,” said one of the hospital staff.

The All Saints Chapel is now open to all Anglicans within the hospital community, and Bishop Odongo encouraged both patients and staff to make use of the space for worship, reflection, and spiritual growth.
