Soroti city charter lions club to plant 1,500 trees in Soroti university

Soroti - Following the negative impact of climate change in the city of Soroti, with little or at times no rain received due to the reduction of trees that help in the mitigation of climate,the charter lions club in Soroti city has embarked on a journey to green the city by planting trees in Soroti university.

 

According to statistics by global forest watch, in 2010, Soroti had 26.5kha of tree cover, extending over 7.8% of its land area. In 2021, it lost 19.9ha of tree cover, equivalent to 7.70kt of CO? emissions.

 

Through different reports, the Lions implemented a program of planting down 1,500 trees in the university.

 

While in a meeting with the university leadership, Peter Carlos Ebiau the Soroti city lions president said that the initiative will not only add beautiful in the university of excellence but will also help in combating climate hazards and health as different tree species like ashok, medicinal neem tree, every green, indian tick, eucalyptus and cashew nuts trees will be planted down.

 

Professor Robert Ikoja-Odongo an academic administrator who also doubles as the vice Chancellor of Soroti University, welcomed the initiative from the Lions saying that it will beautify the university and help in combating climate change and achieving the sustainable development goals.
