In a dramatic turn of events that has redefined the political trajectory of Soroti City, John Enomu has dealt a crushing blow to long-time National Resistance Movement (NRM) leader Willy Bisanga, winning the party’s top seat in an internal election many are calling a “political earthquake.”

Held at Teso College Aloet earlier today, the NRM saw Enomu secure a decisive 48 votes against Bisanga’s 15. The outcome stunned many party insiders and local observers, signaling a major realignment within the party’s urban base in Eastern Uganda.

The contest originally drew four contenders: Willy Bisanga, Joseph Egunyu, Latif Abdul, and John Enomu. However, in the final stretch of the campaign, Abdul shifted focus to the Secretary for Finance position, while Egunyu withdrew and publicly endorsed Enomu.

This strategic coalition significantly boosted Enomu’s support and narrowed the field to a showdown between him and the embattled incumbent.
Notably, Bisanga did not stand in the designated line for candidate backing a symbolic move in NRM internal elections, leaving his supporters uncertain and further eroding his base.

The incumbent, visibly disappointed, later questioned the transparency of the electoral process. “It would have been fairer if I had been present during the consensus discussions,” Bisanga stated, referencing behind-the-scenes negotiations that he claimed proceeded without his knowledge or participation.

Despite his objections, NRM electoral commission official for Soroti city Justin Okello confirmed the results and officially declared John Enomu the new NRM Chairperson for Soroti City. “This was a transparent and peaceful process. We congratulate all the candidates and call for unity moving forward,” Okello said.

Joining Enomu on the newly elected executive committee are Captain Grace Omuron as Vice Chairperson, Esiat Mosk as Secretary for Publicity, and Ojul Patrick as General Secretary. Their leadership is expected to shape the NRM’s strategy in Soroti City as the party prepares for upcoming national and local elections.

Political analysts believe Enomu’s victory reflects a broader desire for change and generational renewal within the party’s grassroots structures. His leadership is likely to introduce new priorities and approaches to party engagement in the region.

As the dust settles, Soroti City remains abuzz with discussion about the implications of this leadership overhaul. For John Enomu, the real work now begins—rebuilding unity, strengthening the party’s urban appeal, and proving that the political earthquake he unleashed was not just a moment, but the start of a movement.
