Juliet Agonyo, the Speaker of Soroti City Council, finds herself navigating a political maze as uncertainty surrounds her bid for the Soroti City Woman MP seat. With the general elections looming in 2026, the delay in confirming whether the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party will hold primaries for the position has left Agonyo, along with other aspirants, in a state of uncertainty.

The FDC Electoral Commission  led by Toterebuka Bamusenda Boniface, recently held a crucial engagement to assess the preparedness of all political aspirants in Soroti . While the meeting was designed to provide clarity on the party's plans, it concluded without a clear decision on whether FDC would conduct primaries for the Woman MP seat.

"People are now going to  start to ask me, 'When will the party hold the primaries?'" Agonyo said in an interview following the engagement. "With the general elections fast approaching, we cannot afford to wait much longer for clarity. The uncertainty is becoming a challenge, and time is slipping away from us."

Agonyo, who has served as the Speaker of the Soroti City Council, has established a strong local presence and is considered a formidable political figure in the region. However, without a firm decision on whether FDC will hold primaries, she is uncertain about how to proceed with her campaign.

The delay in the primaries decision has left several aspirants questioning their political futures. While some candidates are eagerly waiting to contest in the party's internal election, others are beginning to feel the pressure of mounting time constraints, especially as the national electoral calendar moves forward.

For Agonyo, the situation is particularly pressing. She has long been viewed as a strong contender for the Woman MP seat, relying on her extensive local knowledge and political experience to resonate with voters. Yet, the lack of a clear roadmap from the FDC leadership is threatening to undermine her momentum.

Political insiders suggest that the delay in primaries could have broader implications for FDC’s preparedness in Soroti City. Some party members fear that prolonged indecision may result in a lack of effective campaigning, particularly given the rising competition within the region. In addition, some fear that the delay might open opportunities for other parties to capitalize on FDC’s internal challenges.

"This uncertainty is not just frustrating for the candidates but for the supporters as well. People want to know when the primaries are happening so they can organize and prepare," Agonyo added.

As the clock ticks down to 2026, the stakes are high for all involved. In Soroti City, a traditionally competitive electoral city, the FDC’s ability to field a strong and unified candidate is critical to securing victory.

Currently, there is no official timeline from the FDC leadership or the Electoral Commission regarding when a decision will be made. Both Agonyo and other hopefuls are waiting with bated breath for a response that will ultimately determine their next political steps.

As the tension builds, all eyes are now on the FDC and the Electoral Commission to provide a resolution that will allow Soroti City’s political landscape to take shape, with Agonyo and other aspirants eagerly anticipating the party's final decision.
