Police in the East Kyoga region have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the robbery and fatal shooting of a mobile money operator in Soroti City, confirming the arrest of a prime suspect and the recovery of the firearm used in the crime.
The suspect, identified as Emenyu David, also known as “Lipongo,” was arrested on April 10, 2026, in Abim District, where he had reportedly fled following the April 3 killing of Kokunda Patricia. Police believe he is the gunman responsible for the attack.
According to a police statement issued on April 11, the suspect later led investigators to Akaikai Village, where the murder weapon was recovered. Authorities also retrieved other key exhibits, including a motorcycle believed to have been used during the robbery, cash amounting to UGX 3.5 million suspected to be proceeds of the crime, and clothing worn by the assailants.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects had been trailing the victim for months, with plans to rob her dating back to January 2026. Police further revealed that the firearm used in the attack was sourced from South Sudan, raising concerns over the circulation of illegal cross-border weapons.
A total of five suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue. Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest station.
Authorities say more details will be released as inquiries into the case progress.
