Katakwi: Vice President Jessica Alupo has been elected unopposed as Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Veterans League for Katakwi District, further cementing her influence within the ruling party and her home region.
The election, held at the Katakwi District Headquarters, was marked by a peaceful and well-organized process. Initially, the race had attracted three candidates, but Charles Ikabat and Amodoi Ikomaileng withdrew their candidacies ahead of the vote, clearing the way for Alupo’s uncontested victory. James Otilem, the NRM District Registrar, officiated the process and formally declared Alupo the elected chairperson.
Alupo’s elevation to the role underscores her deep-rooted connection with the district and highlights the trust she commands among NRM veterans—a key constituency within the party. Her appointment is widely seen as a strategic move to reinforce the party’s grassroots structures and ensure continued support in the region.
In her acceptance speech, Vice President Alupo thanked the veterans for their confidence and pledged commitment to advocating for their welfare. “This election is a demonstration of our unity and shared commitment to the development of Katakwi and the country. I will ensure veterans are fully involved in local development and their needs are addressed,” she said.
She further emphasized the importance of peaceful and democratic elections. “This was a free and fair process, and I encourage all Ugandans to uphold peace in every electoral activity,” Alupo noted.
Her leadership is expected to revitalize the veterans' league in Katakwi and strengthen the NRM’s presence ahead of future political contests. Observers say Alupo’s new role will enhance her already significant political capital in both district and national politics.
